A zipper merge is one of those things that should be simple and somehow never is. The signs are clear. The lane is ending. Everyone can see what is happening. And yet the second those orange cones show up, people start making it personal. Somebody merges early and acts offended that anyone didn’t. Somebody uses the full lane like they are supposed to and gets treated like a war criminal. It is a traffic pattern, but in Minnesota it can turn into a referendum on character in about fifteen seconds. Some days in daily life feel like that... the path narrows, the pressure rises, and suddenly everyone’s feelings arrive at the same time.

Today is Tuesday, April 7th, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. Video Changed The Story: The City of Minneapolis released video Monday from the January 14th ICE shooting of Julio C. Sosa-Celis in north Minneapolis, and the footage cut against the federal version of what happened. FOX 9 reported the video shows Sosa-Celis running away when he was shot. The same report said the U.S. Attorney’s Office has opened a criminal probe into whether two ICE agents lied under oath about the encounter. You may remember I reported on this shooting earlier in the surge, but yesterday was different because people finally got to see the footage for themselves.

2. Military Lawyers Faced A Test: A federal case in Minnesota is now testing whether the Justice Department can use Army JAG lawyers to prosecute civilians in federal court. The Star Tribune reported the challenge grew out of an Operation Metro Surge case involving a north Minneapolis man, with defense lawyers arguing the arrangement violates the Posse Comitatus Act’s limits on military involvement in civilian law enforcement. After resignations and upheaval hit the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office earlier this year, the federal government brought in 25 Army lawyers. A judge has now heard arguments on whether that move can legally be used against civilians in Minnesota cases.

3. Farmers Are Planting Into Uncertainty: MPR’s Monday program on Minnesota farming showed how uncertain the numbers look heading into planting season. Fuel and fertilizer remain expensive, tariffs and trade uncertainty are clouding export markets, and weather risk is always sitting there too. Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen and a western Minnesota farmer both described making expensive spring decisions without much certainty about what the crop will be worth by the time it comes out of the ground. Planting season does not wait for policy to settle down… seed has to go in, inputs have to be bought, and farmers are making those calls while trade rules, shipping costs, and commodity prices are all still moving around them.

4. New Mothers Are Getting More Isolated: Minnesota Reformer reported Monday that fear of immigration enforcement is deepening postpartum isolation for immigrant mothers in Minnesota. Doctors and advocates told the outlet that newly postpartum patients need sleep, follow-up care, and help from friends and family, but crackdown conditions have made some women too afraid to leave home or ask others to come by. Some are missing appointments, limiting visitors, or going without the practical support that usually fills the first weeks after birth. The result is that a period already known for medical and emotional vulnerability is getting harder and riskier for families living under enforcement fear.

It was not all movement in the wrong direction. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. A Judge Backed The Limits: A Ramsey County judge dismissed the charge against Emily Phillips, the woman arrested outside Cities Church during Easter Sunday services in St. Paul. KARE 11 reported Judge Maria Mitchell found no probable cause after Phillips had already complied with police instructions to put down her megaphone and was using only her unamplified voice. Prosecutors can still decide whether to refile, but as of Monday the case had not held together. I reported on the arrest yesterday and by the end of the day, the first court review had already come to a different conclusion and did not back the basis for the charge.

2. Kids Are Walking Back In: Students in Minneapolis and Columbia Heights are returning to full in-person classes this week after districts created temporary virtual options for families shaken by the immigration crackdown. MPR reported Monday that the emergency learning setup is ending, and that means at least some students who had been staying home are now going back into school buildings. Teachers and administrators said fear has not disappeared, and some children are still carrying trauma or have not returned at all. Districts kept instruction going through a period when many families were afraid to send kids to school, and now some classrooms are starting to fill back up.

3. Free Gas Drew Long Lines: A Twin Cities church gave away free gas over the weekend, and the lines were long enough that it was still a story Monday. Bring Me The News reported the first 600 drivers across two locations got a $30 fill-up. People lined up early, cars moved through, and hundreds of drivers left with one less expense to cover that day. Fuel costs are climbing again and household budgets are getting stretched from several directions. Thirty dollars is not a big fix, but for hundreds of Minnesota drivers it covered gas they needed that day.

4. The Wild Are Back In: The Minnesota Wild have clinched a playoff spot, and MPR reported Monday that they now have another chance to win a postseason series for the first time since 2015. The Wild made it in after a late push, with Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov helping carry the offense at the right time. Playoff tickets went on sale Monday, and the team heads into the postseason with a chance to break a drought that has lasted a decade. For a state that tracks hockey like weather, a playoff berth can change the mood of a week. There is a bracket now, a schedule ahead, and something a lot of people will be watching together.

Minnesota was not the only place where the day got heavier. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Iran Deadline Hardened: Reuters reported Monday that Trump said his Tuesday deadline for Iran to make a deal is final and unlikely to be extended, even as Iranian officials rejected a temporary ceasefire framework and pushed instead for a permanent end to the war, sanctions relief, reconstruction support, and guarantees around safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said broader U.S. strikes remain on the table if Tehran does not comply. Iran said it would not accept a short pause while Israeli and U.S. pressure remained in place. With nearly a fifth of the world’s oil passing through Hormuz, the standoff landed as both a military threat and an economic one.

2. Fed Warned On Prices: Reuters reported Monday that Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack both warned inflation is getting worse as rising energy prices from the Iran war add pressure to an economy already dealing with tariffs and sticky costs. Goolsbee said he had been hopeful inflation was moving back toward the Fed’s 2 percent target, but called the latest turn a shift from orange toward red. Hammack said inflation has been above target for five years and described the current picture as burnt orange. Together, the comments were a warning that the price pressure people are already feeling at the pump and in stores may not ease anytime soon.

When The Road Narrows

John F. Kennedy said, “Civility is not a sign of weakness.” A lot of today’s stories felt like that moment when the lane starts closing and people stop reacting to the road and start reacting to each other. New video changed what people could see, courts were asked to define what the rules actually are… families, farmers, and mothers were all trying to move through conditions they did not choose and could not fully control. That is the hard part of a zipper merge, and our daily lives too. The road narrows whether we like it or not. The question is whether we make the bottleneck worse by how we treat each other when it does.

Roads may close… but we do not have to close our hearts to each other.

By this point in spring, most of Minnesota looks like it has moved on. The roads are clearer, the air is softer, people start thinking about what is next as the seasons change. But there is almost always that last snowbank... the gray one in the corner of a parking lot, hanging on long after the rest has melted, ugly in a way fresh snow never is. It takes a while to disappear completely. And until it does, it just sits there... a reminder that even when the worst has passed, what it left behind can still be messy, visible, and slow to heal.

Today is Monday, April 6th, 2026. Here’s what happened in Minnesota:

1. Easter Brought It Back: A woman was arrested Sunday morning outside Cities Church in St. Paul during another protest tied to the church’s connection to the federal immigration crackdown. Police said she was taken into custody for disrupting a religious service. Protesters said she had already complied before officers moved in. It was a smaller scene than the January confrontation, but it put that fault line back into public view on Easter morning. The crowds may be smaller now, but the tension around Operation Metro Surge, public worship, and federal power clearly did not disappear with winter.

2. The Bill Kept Rising: Minnesota’s National Guard response to Operation Metro Surge is now estimated to have cost the state about $5.2 million. The Guard was activated from January 8th through February 25th after the fatal shooting of Renee Good, with troops assigned in support roles across the region prepared for more unrest. That estimate puts a firmer number on a chapter that is still costing Minnesota long after the most visible federal presence eased. The crackdown did not just leave behind trauma and court fights… it left behind a real bill for the public too.

3. Forest Science Took A Hit: The Trump administration is moving to close the U.S. Forest Service research facility in Grand Rapids, a lab tied to globally recognized forestry and climate work in northern Minnesota. The site has been central to long-running research on peatlands, warming, and forest change, including the well-known SPRUCE experiment in the Marcell Experimental Forest. It is a blow to work rooted in Minnesota’s woods and wetlands, at the same time wildfire risk, climate pressure, and land-management questions are getting bigger.

4. Health Math Got Harder: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota reported a $353 million operating loss for 2025, and the fallout is raising more questions about what Medicare Advantage will look like for Minnesotans in 2027. The insurer said rising medical and pharmacy costs drove much of the damage, with claims spending up sharply over the previous year. That does not mean benefits change tomorrow, but it is another warning sign in a market that has already been unstable for older Minnesotans. Washington’s impact and the economics of care are showing up here in the numbers, and those numbers are getting harder to ignore.

Even with some winter still hanging on, there were signs of movement too. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. George Floyd Square Moved Forward: The long delayed redesign of George Floyd Square is finally moving toward construction. Street and infrastructure work around 38th and Chicago is expected to begin in June, with major work stretching into 2027. That doesn’t settle every disagreement around the site, nor does it erase the years of grief, planning, and argument that got it here… but it is a real step. After years of the square existing in a kind of civic standstill, Minneapolis is finally moving from debate into work while still trying to preserve what the intersection came to mean.

2. The Frost Are Back In: The Minnesota Frost clinched another playoff berth with a 6 to 5 win over Vancouver. Kelly Pannek had two goals and two assists as Minnesota snapped a three game skid and locked up a postseason spot for the third straight year. It was not a clean, easy win… it was the kind of game that swung, tightened, and had to be finished under pressure. Minnesota sports stories do not fix much on their own, but this was still one of those moments that gave people something uncomplicated to celebrate.

3. The Festival Came Back: The International Festival of Minnesota is returning to St. Paul after years away, with the event set for April 10 and 11 at RiverCentre. Organizers say participants from 67 nations and ethnic communities will be part of the festival. The old Festival of Nations mattered because it made Minnesota feel wider, fuller, and more connected than the narrow version of the state people sometimes carry around. Bringing it back now feels timely… at a moment when so much national politics is built around suspicion and narrowing who belongs, Minnesota is about to spend two days doing the opposite in public.

4. Work Kept Showing Up: KARE 11 spotlighted 360 Communities in Burnsville, reporting that the organization serves about 26,000 people each year through food shelves, resource centers, violence prevention work, housing help, and education support. It is not a flashy story… it is the kind of work people usually notice only after it is gone. A lot of the work that keeps communities from breaking does not look dramatic from the outside. It looks repetitive, practical, and local.

Minnesota was not the only place where yesterday left a mark. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Iran Got More Dangerous Again: President Trump said Sunday that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday evening or face U.S. strikes on infrastructure including power plants and bridges. Reuters and AP both reported the ultimatum as the war continued to disrupt oil shipments and raise the risk of wider escalation. This was not just another round of rhetoric. The Strait is one of the most important oil chokepoints in the world, and every threat around it now carries consequences far beyond the region. By Sunday, the story was not only military… it was also about shipping, fuel prices, and what happens when a war starts touching the global economy directly.

2. Oil Markets Are Bracing Too: Reuters reported Sunday that OPEC+ agreed to raise output quotas by 206,000 barrels per day for May, but the increase is mostly theoretical while the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted. The same reporting said crude prices have surged to nearly $120 a barrel, with analysts warning they could climb higher if the shutdown continues. Energy shocks do not stay on a map. They show up later in gas prices, shipping costs, and household budgets. Even the effort to calm markets on Sunday came with an obvious problem attached: the route that matters most is still in crisis.

What Takes Time

Helen Keller wrote, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.” Some of today’s stories felt like that last snowbank. The heavy storms may have passed, but what it left behind is still here... the cost, the strain, the public anger, the complaints, the unfinished arguments, the parts that are hardest to clear because they have been compacted over time. That is true in our state and it is true in healing. Things do not always disappear the moment the weather changes. Sometimes they sit there longer than anyone wants, rougher and uglier at the end than they were at the beginning. The fact that it is still visible does not mean it is permanent.

Winter never wins. Spring just comes slower than we’d like… but it always comes.

Easter at my house is in a funny in-between stage right now. My 16 year old has mostly outgrown the hunt itself, but he still loves helping hide the eggs and making it fun for his little sister. My 7 year old, meanwhile, is still fully in it... completely delighted, determined to find every last one, and convinced there is always one more if she just keeps looking. I love watching both of them, because it reminds me that Easter is not really just about the first rush into the yard. It is also about what gets missed. The eggs tucked a little too well into the grass, behind a step, under a chair, or in the one spot that seemed smart at the time. Today’s news in Minnesota felt a little like that.

Today is Easter Sunday, April 5th, 2026. Here’s what happened in Minnesota:

1. Half Already Gone: Nearly 1,700 people arrested during Operation Metro Surge this winter had already been deported by April 3, according to data analyzed by APM Reports and MPR News. The records show federal agents averaged about 49 arrests a day during the operation. Around 30 of the people arrested were 16 or younger, including one child reported to be just 2 or 3 years old. The numbers became public through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit brought by the Deportation Data Project, and by the time the records were released, many of the people behind them were already out of the country.

2. Home Raids Hit Court: Six Minnesotans sued ICE and DHS after agents allegedly entered homes without judicial warrants during recent enforcement actions in the Twin Cities. The lawsuit says officers forced or pressured their way into residences, detained people without proper legal authority, and in some cases went to the wrong homes altogether. The plaintiffs are asking a federal court to block further warrantless home entries and declare the practice unconstitutional. The case takes a broad argument about immigration enforcement and turns it into a court record built around named households, specific addresses, and what agents allegedly did once they were inside.

3. The Quiet Shift: After months of visible street level arrests in Minnesota, immigration enforcement appears to be shifting toward a less public model that leans more heavily on local law enforcement. NPR reported that the administration is expanding use of 287(g) agreements, which let local agencies take on some immigration enforcement functions. DHS officials have signaled they want ICE operating less as the public facing force and more through transfers, jail systems, and local partnerships. That does not make enforcement smaller. It moves more of it into handoffs, booking systems, and local groups that families and neighborhood observers are less likely to see in real time.

4. Hospitality Took Another Hit: A new survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and Hospitality Minnesota found the winter did not just shake neighborhoods and schools. It also hit restaurants and hotels. More than half of the businesses surveyed reported lower customer traffic and lower profits, and more than half said immigration enforcement actions had hurt operations. About 30 percent said they had to temporarily close or reduce hours. Owners also pointed to labor shortages and tariff related cost pressure, but the effect of the enforcement crackdown showed up plainly in staffing, operating hours, and sales at businesses that were already operating on tight margins.

It is not all about what got missed the first time through. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Federal Court Blocks HUD Cuts: A federal appeals court left in place an order blocking the Trump administration from sharply restricting parts of the federal housing assistance system, giving states including Minnesota more time while the case continues. Attorney General Keith Ellison said the dispute centers on changes to HUD’s Continuum of Care program, which supports permanent housing for vulnerable people. The administration had asked to move the policy forward while the legal fight played out, but the court declined. For now, the existing housing protections remain in place while the case moves ahead, which means programs serving people at risk of homelessness do not lose that support yet.

2. Water Bill Pushes Forward: Minnesota lawmakers are advancing a bill that would require major industrial water users, including data centers, to get their own permits instead of drawing under a city’s broader municipal approval. MPR reported that supporters say the current system allows very large users to avoid the level of review they would face if they had to apply directly. The proposal would give the Department of Natural Resources more authority to examine whether a project’s water use is sustainable before it moves forward. As companies keep eyeing data center growth in Minnesota, lawmakers are trying to close a permitting gap before more long term water demand gets locked in.

3. Record Graduation: Minnesota’s four year graduation rate for the class of 2025 reached 84.9 percent, the highest in state history. MPR reported that Black, Asian, and American Indian students all posted gains, and both Minneapolis and St. Paul saw notable increases among American Indian graduates. State education officials said the numbers were encouraging after years shaped by pandemic disruption and uneven recovery. At the same time, Education Commissioner Willie Jett said attendance declines tied to immigration enforcement are more recent and are not fully reflected in this data yet, which means the progress is real even as newer pressures are still building.

4. Opening Day Delivered: The Twins’ home opener ended up being longer and stranger than expected, but it also gave people something fun to hold onto. A power outage delayed the start at Target Field by nearly an hour, disrupting entry and shutting down concessions while thousands of fans stood in cold rain waiting to get inside. Then the game started, and the Twins came back to beat Tampa Bay 10 to 4. Tristan Gray, who had nearly talked himself into life after baseball this offseason, hit the first grand slam of his major league career in the seventh inning. More than 36,000 people waited out the mess and got a good one.

There were important things happening beyond Minnesota too. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. 100% Drug Tariffs: Trump announced a new tariff plan that could impose duties of up to 100 percent on some imported patented pharmaceuticals, opening another fight over drug prices, supply chains, and domestic manufacturing. Reuters reported that companies building domestic plants or making pricing deals with the administration could avoid the full tariff, while others could face it after a transition period. Drug companies warned the move could raise costs and disrupt investment decisions tied to specialized medications and overseas production. It adds another layer of uncertainty to a part of the economy where manufacturing timelines are long, prices are politically sensitive, and supply disruptions can hit patients fast.

2. U.S. Losses Changed The War: The Iran war looked different by Saturday after two U.S. military aircraft were brought down and the search for a missing American crew member continued. Reuters and AP reported that one crew member from a downed F-15E was rescued while another remained missing, cutting directly into claims of control and air superiority. Trump also escalated pressure on Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, tying the military conflict to a global shipping route that helps shape oil prices and supply chains. By Saturday, the war included downed U.S. aircraft, an active rescue operation, and a widening sense that the conflict had moved into a more dangerous phase.

After the Hunt

Craig Childs wrote, “All the secrets in the world worth knowing are hiding in plain sight.” At my house, the obvious eggs are found first. Then everybody assumes the hunt is over and stops looking, but that is never really how it goes. There are always a few left behind, tucked under a bush, hidden a little too well, found later than expected. Sometimes they are cracked open by the time we spot them… but even then, the shell is not useless. It can still be filled again. It can still bring joy. Sometimes the most important things are not the ones everybody saw in the first rush, but the ones still sitting there after people assume the story is over.

Maybe the good things were there all along, just waiting for us to find them.

Minnesota is home to the Mall of America, the largest mall in the country, so I probably do not have to tell you… it is big. It has maps, level markers, and digital directories everywhere. It is not because the place is poorly designed… it is because once something gets big enough and busy enough, people need help staying oriented inside it. You can be heading somewhere specific and still end up turned around if you lose track of where you are in relation to everything else. Yesterday’s news in Minnesota felt a little like that… a day with a lot of movement, confusion, and a real need for the kinds of markers that tell people what is changing, what is holding, and where people can still get their bearings.

Today is Friday, April 3rd, 2026. Here’s what happened in Minnesota:

1. They Came Back Again: The federal government moved Wednesday to try to re-detain 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, after a judge had ordered them released earlier this year. The family was arrested outside their Columbia Heights home during Operation Metro Surge, and their case became one of the most closely watched local examples of how far the operation reached into ordinary family life. MPR reported the Justice Department moved to reopen the legal fight over whether the father and son could be sent back into custody after their January release order.

2. The Job Engine Slipped: Minnesota’s unemployment rate rose to 4.4 percent in January, climbing above the national rate for the first time in nearly two decades. State officials said the labor force shrank, private-sector employers cut jobs, and economic momentum slowed at the start of the year. MPR reported DEED Commissioner Matt Varilek pointed to federal tariffs, lower business confidence, and immigration enforcement disruptions as part of the drag on the economy. The figures are for January, but they landed Thursday as one of the clearest statewide signs yet that Minnesota entered the year carrying more strain than earlier reports had shown.

3. No Charges After The Stop: Rep. Walter Hudson will not be charged after police found him apparently impaired while carrying a loaded handgun during the same late-night White Bear Lake traffic stop that led to Rep. Elliot Engen’s DWI arrest. The Star Tribune reported police believed Hudson was intoxicated and noted that carrying with a blood alcohol level above 0.04 would have been a misdemeanor, but no charge followed. 4. Downtown Lost More Ground: Downtown Minneapolis property values fell again, marking a fifth straight year of decline and another major drop in office values. The Star Tribune reported that office properties were down about 20 percent this year, continuing the long reset of the commercial core after remote work, vacancies, and weak demand reshaped the market. Citywide values still rose overall, but repeated losses in the office market change how much value is concentrated downtown and how much pressure shifts elsewhere in the tax base. That is becoming a bigger issue as cities and property owners keep adjusting to a weaker office market.

Even in a place that feels crowded and confusing, the signs that matter still help people find each other. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Allina Workers Reached A Deal: After more than two years of negotiations and more than 60 bargaining sessions, Allina Health and the union representing its doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners reached a tentative first contract agreement. MPR reported the proposed three-year deal covers more than 600 providers in clinics across the metro and includes language on pay, staffing, safety, and provider autonomy. The agreement came after a one-day strike last fall and after workers had already shown they were willing to escalate further if talks kept dragging. Members still have to ratify it, but Thursday brought a labor breakthrough inside one of Minnesota’s biggest health systems.

2. Rural Hospitals Got Relief: Medicare payments are set to start flowing again to struggling rural hospitals in Minnesota after months of billing failures held up millions of dollars in reimbursements. MPR reported the federal government is deactivating the billing codes that had triggered widespread claim denials, a change that could finally release badly needed money to hospitals that were running out of time. Mille Lacs Health System in Onamia had already warned it was weeks away from more serious financial consequences if the payments did not resume. For small communities that rely on a single local hospital, the fix meant more than an accounting update. It meant care staying closer to home for now.

3. Ojibwe Broke New Ground: A Hinckley-Finlayson student became the first person in state history to earn Minnesota’s high school language proficiency certificate in Ojibwe. The state has offered the certificate since 2014, allowing students to demonstrate fluency in a language other than English and potentially earn college credit, but no student had earned it in Ojibwe until now. MPR connected the milestone to broader language revitalization work across Minnesota, where tribal colleges, educators, elders, and families have spent years rebuilding what federal boarding school policy once tried to strip away. Thursday’s recognition belonged to one student, but it also marked a first for the state’s language certificate program.

4. The Recalls Finally Came: Minnesota issued its first cannabis product recalls as lawmakers and regulators continued tightening the rules around the state’s still-new legal market. MPR reported the recalled items involved edible products, and state officials said the move was part of a system designed to identify problems and remove products from sale. The rollout has been uneven and lawmakers are still reworking parts of the law, but this showed the state using its tools before a bad product stayed on shelves longer. That is not exciting news, but it is the kind of protection people are supposed to get from regulation and will help the industry become more trusted.

Minnesota was not the only place where people were looking for markers this week. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Bondi Was Pushed Out: President Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday and named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting attorney general. Reuters reported the move followed growing frustration inside Trump’s orbit, especially over Bondi’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and broader dissatisfaction with the department’s performance. Bondi had been a central figure in a Justice Department already reshaped around Trump’s priorities, and her removal came in the middle of major legal fights across the country.

2. Warrants Do Matter: A federal judge in California said border officials violated her earlier order limiting warrantless immigration arrests, finding agents detained people without reasonable suspicion and relied on 11 virtually identical arrest forms instead of case-specific facts. On the same day, the ACLU of Minnesota, ACLU of D.C., Protect Democracy, and others sued DHS and ICE over a secret “Home Entry Memo” that they say encouraged agents to enter homes with an administrative form instead of a judicial warrant. Together, the ruling and the lawsuit put two parts of the same enforcement strategy under sharper legal scrutiny: arrests in public and entries into private homes.

James Baldwin wrote, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” The same is true in any place big enough and busy enough to throw you off. When the system gets crowded or disorienting, the most useful thing is often the plainest thing… a clear marker, a fixed point, a reminder of where you actually are. A contract deal, a court ruling, a payment fix, a first in Ojibwe, a public recall… these are not the whole solution, but they are the kind of “you are here” signs that keep people from losing track of the bigger picture. You do not need to see the whole building to find your next turn.

A lot of people know St. Anthony Falls as a pretty place to walk or take visitors, but it used to be one of the most important industrial sites in the country. The water at the falls powered the mills that helped turn Minneapolis into the flour-milling capital of the world in the late 1800s. In other words, this city was built in part by people figuring out how to work with force that was already there... water that was strong, constant, and not interested in anyone’s convenience. I thought about that today, because so much of this news feels like people in Minnesota trying to hold on, redirect pressure where they can, and build something livable in the middle of a current they did not choose.

Today is Thursday, April 2nd, 2026. Here’s what happened in Minnesota:

1. Minnesota Stayed in the Crosshairs: Minnesota stayed in the middle of two Trump administration pressure campaigns again. The Star Tribune reported Wednesday that Minnesota remains the state federal officials keep pointing to as they widen their anti-fraud push into other Democratic-led states. At the same time, Trump signed an executive order Tuesday attempting to change how mail ballots are handled, directing the Postal Service to use a DHS-compiled citizenship list. Secretary of State Steve Simon pushed back, saying the president has no authority to unilaterally change election law and that Minnesota is exploring legal options. Courts blocked major parts of Trump’s last elections order, and new challenges are already taking shape.

2. Charges Finally Landed: FOX 9 reported Tuesday that two Oklahoma bounty hunters were charged after prosecutors said they pointed what looked like guns at civilians in downtown Minneapolis during the March 3 confrontation that unfolded at the height of metro-wide fear over ICE activity. Court records say Garrett Willis, 28, pointed what appeared to be a handgun at civilians while James Willis, 54, carried a pepper-ball launcher that looked like a rifle and fired pepper balls at people’s feet. Both are from Ardmore, Oklahoma. The charges do not answer every question about who they were working with or why the scene looked so close to the anonymous force people had already been watching… but names were finally attached to it.

3. War Hit The Pump: Average gas prices in Minnesota kept climbing Wednesday, reaching $3.52 a gallon. The state remains below the national average, which topped $4 this week for the first time since 2022, but Minnesotans are still feeling a sharp jump at the pump. AAA says regular gas in Minnesota has risen about 73 cents over the past month. Petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan told MPR the biggest factor is the ongoing U.S. war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, while the Midwest has been somewhat shielded because Minnesota refineries are not positioned to export fuel the way coastal markets are.

4. Labor Money Got Squeezed: St. Louis County may lose about $6.5 million in federal road money unless it drops its long-standing project labor agreement policy. The money is tied to five road and bridge projects, and county leaders now have to decide whether to hold onto union labor standards or try to preserve the funding. The pressure is coming from the Trump administration, which is effectively telling local governments to fall in line on labor policy if they want federal dollars to keep moving. It is one more example of Washington using money to reach deep into local decisions.

It is not all force without direction. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. St. Paul Holds the Line: St. Paul opened a new two-day application window Wednesday for emergency rental assistance aimed at residents financially destabilized by Operation Metro Surge, with eligible households able to receive up to $3,500 paid directly to landlords through a lottery system. That opened the same week the city’s new 60-day pre-eviction notice ordinance was set to take effect May 14 after passing unanimously without Mayor Kaohly Her’s signature. Minneapolis failed to override Mayor Jacob Frey’s veto of a similar policy last week. In St. Paul, both forms of protection are now moving at once.

2. A Song Met The Moment: Minneapolis band Sallyforth released a new single Wednesday called “Clover,” a song the group originally wrote about surviving a severe weather event. As MPR noted, the song is landing in a different way now, after months of fear, violence, and instability tied to Operation Metro Surge. The band is directing a portion of digital streaming revenue toward mutual aid funds supporting affected families. Hear it here:

3. Homeowners Got A Shot: Minnesota lawmakers heard testimony Wednesday on a bill that would cap manufactured home park rent increases at 3 percent a year and give residents a chance to buy the property before it is sold. Residents from places including Blaine, Northfield, and Lake Elmo said lot rents have surged after out-of-state corporations bought their parks. With roughly 50,000 manufactured homes across Minnesota, the debate goes straight at one of the state’s biggest sources of unsubsidized affordable housing. Park owners told lawmakers the proposal could make it harder to keep their operations viable.

4. Stillwater Chef Won Big: Stillwater pizza maker Anthony Gilbert picked up major honors at the International Pizza Expo, placing fifth in the world in Detroit-style pizza and first in the Northwestern Division. FOX 9 reported the competition drew more than 780 contestants, and Gilbert said the recognition came from dough and ingredients he prepared back at his restaurant before hauling them to Las Vegas. The award-winning pizzas went on sale Wednesday at Melt Pizza Company in downtown Stillwater.

And of course, the current is not only running through Minnesota. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Cases Were Quietly Dropped: The Justice Department declined to pursue more than 23,000 criminal investigations during its first six months as it redirected resources toward immigration enforcement. ProPublica reported that former officials described pressure to chase easier immigration numbers while more complex cases, including fraud, terrorism, and national security matters, were left behind. Prosecutors told the outlet the scale of the shift was unlike anything they had seen. It also meant less attention on other serious crimes the department is supposed to be investigating.

2. Birthright Case Looked Weak: Supreme Court justices across the ideological spectrum sounded skeptical Wednesday of Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship during oral arguments, with conservative justices as well as liberals pressing the administration’s legal theory. Trump attended the session himself, the first sitting president known to do so, and stayed for roughly 75 minutes before leaving as the opposing argument began. A ruling is expected by summer, but the hearing itself was notable for how little comfort the administration appeared to get from the bench. It is one of the biggest constitutional fights now moving through the courts, and Wednesday’s arguments suggested the White House may have a tougher case than it wanted people to think.

Handle the Current

Langston Hughes wrote, “My soul has grown deep like the rivers.” The people who built around St. Anthony Falls did not get to decide whether the water would be strong. They just had to figure out what could be built with full knowledge of the force in front of them. That is part of what I heard in today’s stories too... not easy answers, not calm conditions, just people and institutions trying to hold, protect, and keep something going under real pressure.

Anyone who has ever worn something long enough to love it knows there is usually one small place where it starts to go first... a seam under strain, a loose thread at the edge, a spot that does not look like much until you realize it is helping hold everything together. Most of the time, the stitch that matters is not the part anybody notices. It is practical, easy to miss, and only really reveals itself when the pressure starts pulling in every direction. Minnesota’s stories have the same feeling… a look at what is fraying, and who or what is still refusing to give way.

Today is Wednesday, April 1, 2026, here’s what happened in Minnesota:

1. Arrest Data Broke Through: New federal data showed ICE arrested 3,789 people in Minnesota during Operation Metro Surge, and MPR reported that three quarters of them had no criminal conviction on record. Just over 13 percent had pending criminal charges. The Minnesota Reformer reported Somali nationals made up less than 3 percent of arrests, even though federal officials spent months using “Somali fraud” as a public justification for the crackdown. The data also showed about 35 percent of the arrests were “collateral,” meaning people were not the original targets. That gives Minnesotans a much clearer picture of what this operation actually was.

2. Counterprotester Faced Charges: A 36-year-old St. Cloud man appeared in Hennepin County court Tuesday on felony charges after police say he punched a man in the face at a March 28 No Kings protest in Bloomington, breaking his nose and sending him to surgery. FOX 9 reported the alleged victim had pushed the man’s phone away after he pointed it at the victim’s child. Police said the defendant was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying chemical irritant when officers found him. He had also been arrested at earlier protests near Fort Snelling in December and in Stillwater this month. The charges carry up to five years on each count.

3. Fraud Kept Billing: FOX 9 reported that a Minnesota Medicaid provider who had been banned by UCare in 2019 after a credible fraud allegation still kept billing for nearly two more years. The station found roughly $600,000 in overpayments after that ban and reported that former fraud prosecutor Steve Forrest said both managed-care organizations and the Department of Human Services appeared to be asleep at the wheel. The story points to a long oversight failure, not a one-time mistake.

4. Bonuses Raised Eyebrows: The Star Tribune reported that former St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter awarded nearly $96,000 in discretionary bonuses to appointees as he left office, with the money coming out of the 2026 budget. Carter said the payments were for exceptional performance, but they landed in the middle of what he himself had described as a tight budget moment. When governments ask people to accept austerity, nearly six figures in exit bonuses tend to get noticed.

Even when the threads are pulling, there are always people doing the quiet, necessary work of mending. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Springsteen Brought It Home: Bruce Springsteen opened his U.S. tour in Minneapolis on Tuesday and brought “Streets of Minneapolis” back to the city that inspired it. AP reported he tied the song directly to the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti and to the broader federal crackdown that shook Minnesota earlier this year. That made the show more than a routine tour stop. One of the biggest musicians in the country chose to start here, with a song rooted in what happened here, and made sure those names and that history traveled with him. For a story powerful people would probably prefer to shrink, that matters.

2. Faith Leaders Stayed Present: MPR hosted a Tuesday conversation with faith leaders who were on the front lines when ICE surged into Minnesota in January, and they spoke plainly about what their communities experienced and how they responded. They talked about families seeking help, congregations opening their doors, and the role churches and mosques played when official systems were either absent or part of the harm. It was not framed as a tidy ending. It felt more like a public record of who stayed with people when things got bad. Minnesota has a long habit of institutions failing and neighbors stepping in anyway, and that conversation kept that record alive.

3. New Roots Kept Growing: MPR reported from Moorhead on New Roots, a program helping immigrants grow food, build farm skills, and help shape the local food system. The work is practical and local, but it also pushes back against a much bigger lie. While immigrants are being treated by powerful people as a threat to contain, programs like this show people building community, feeding neighbors, and putting down roots in Minnesota. That does not erase the fear many families are still living with. It does show another reality at the same time, one grounded in work, knowledge, and belonging.

4. Owamni Turns A Page: MPR reported that Sean Sherman’s Owamni is heading into a bigger Minneapolis chapter under a new name as it moves to the Guthrie. Sherman said the project is growing, not leaving its mission behind, and the move puts one of the country’s most important Indigenous food spaces on an even larger stage. That is a real Minnesota success story, especially at a time when so many cultural and community institutions are being asked to do more with less. Expansion is not the most urgent kind of hope, but it is still hope. Something important here is not just surviving. It is getting room to grow.

The strain we feel locally is just one piece of a much larger fabric. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Court Hit Conversion Bans: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8 to 1 against Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ minors, saying the law likely violated the First Amendment. AP reported the decision could put similar laws in about two dozen states at risk. LGBTQ+ advocates and major medical groups have long argued that conversion therapy is harmful and discredited, while supporters of the challenge framed the case as a free speech issue. The ruling will not stay contained to Colorado. Decisions like this move fast into statehouses, school systems, clinics, and family life, and this one was one of the biggest civil rights stories in the country Tuesday.

2. Judge Restored Parole Protections: A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration unlawfully revoked legal status for migrants who entered using the Biden-era CBP One app. Reuters reported DHS had told more than 900,000 people their humanitarian parole was over and that they needed to leave, but the judge said the administration could not wipe that status away in one mass move without following the law. It was one of the clearest legal pushbacks against the administration’s immigration agenda in weeks. For families whose lives have been repeatedly thrown around by executive threats and shifting rules, Tuesday’s ruling at least slowed one of those swings.

The Stitch That Holds

Jane Austen wrote, “My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.” It is incredible how many people have shown up and kept showing up for each other since the surge started. So much of what keeps us from coming apart is not calling for attention... it is a community telling the truth about what happened, a court stepping in, and a room full of people refusing to disappear. It is people deciding that we are one community, and that what affects one of us affects all of us.

Sometimes what keeps the edge from unraveling is just one stubborn stitch refusing to break.

Last Saturday, the air in St. Paul did not just carry the fresh warmth of spring. It carried the literal weight of 200,000 souls. Standing on the steps of the State Capitol and looking out over a sea of people that stretched from University Avenue back toward the cathedral, the scale was difficult to process. For those of us there, the primary feeling was not claustrophobia. It was relief.

Lately, we’ve been in a political climate that has felt like a suffocating blanket. Regardless of your side of the aisle, between the conflict in Iran and the rising cost of living, it is easy to feel isolated or overwhelmed. Yet as the light rails groaned under the weight of standing-room crowds and highway exits backed up for miles, something changed. Every delayed train and slow-moving march served as a physical reminder: none of us are alone.

I attended the rally with my 16-year-old son. Like many of his peers, he has spent his formative years watching an economy that seems increasingly decoupled from the American Dream we were promised. He sees a world where the cost of living outpaces wages, where safety nets have been frayed by design, and where executive power feels unreachable and unconnected to the population.

To see him energized by this was not just a "parent moment." It was a revelation. For a generation often accused of being checked out, the "No Kings" rally proved that they are deeply and viscerally tuned in. They are not asking for handouts. They are asking for the deck to be re-shuffled back to what our parents enjoyed. They want an America where hard work actually buys security, which is a concept that feels like a vintage relic to a teenager in 2026.

The atmosphere was punctuated by the music of Bruce Springsteen and the rhetoric of Bernie Sanders, but the real power was in the silence between the speeches. It was the jovial discussions with strangers and the collective intake of breath from a crowd realizing its own strength. We were there to reclaim the idea of civic participation as a joy and privilege, rather than a chore.

"In America, we don't have kings, and we won't back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty." That slogan, popularized by the 50501 Movement, took on a new life on Saturday. It was not just a political statement. It was a promise to the next generation.

As we realized we would never get on the Green Line back and would have to jog four miles to our car, my son was not complaining. He was talking about what comes next. He felt the "3.5% rule" in action, which is the idea that when that percentage of the population shows up to protest, it creates a tipping point that can shift the trajectory of a nation. If 200,000 people are willing to stand for hours just to say "no" to the erosion of our democracy, then perhaps the deck is not permanently stacked.

Saturday in St. Paul was a heartbeat. For the sake of the other 16-year-olds watching, we have to make sure that heart keeps beating long after the signs are folded away.

I love my dad. He’s 73, retired, and if you ever ask him “how was the drive up?”, he will extoll the virtues of “taking the backroads” every time. Part of it just seems practical... less traffic, less nonsense, more room to breathe, and he often swears it’s better than the busy freeways. I think the real reason is that he likes seeing the state the way it actually is, not just the fastest route through it. Like today’s stories, the backroads don’t give you an easy drive, but they do remind you that there is always more than one way through.

Today is Tuesday, March 31, 2026, here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. Roosevelt Staffer Spoke: Quentin Williams, an educational support professional at Roosevelt High School, gave his first interview since Border Patrol agents tackled and choked him on school grounds on January 7. He said five or six agents pinned him down, one had hands on his neck, and another pulled out some of his hair. Williams said he blacked out and later wrote that if they had stayed on him two seconds longer, he felt he would have died. His charge was later dismissed. Williams said he had been trying to help a co-worker who had already been tackled when agents took him down.

2. DOJ Opened Second Front: The Trump administration sued the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota State High School League on Monday over policies allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls sports. The complaint asks a federal court to bar transgender girls from girls prep sports statewide and argues the policies violate Title IX. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the administration would not tolerate policies that ignore what she called biological reality. Attorney General Keith Ellison called the suit astonishing. The filing opens another direct legal fight between the administration and Minnesota.

3. USDA Grant Was Cut: The U.S. Department of Agriculture canceled 49 of 50 contracts under its Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program, and three Minnesota projects lost funding. The canceled Minnesota projects served Latino, Indigenous, and other underserved farmers. One grantee said 20 farmers had been waiting on down-payment help to buy land. Another said the program had hoped to help about 20 new farmers get access to affordable land over the next three years. USDA cancellation letters said the program relied on discriminatory DEI preferences and wasteful spending.

4. Hospital Nears The Edge: Mille Lacs Health System in Onamia has been weeks from running out of money after a federal anti-fraud billing system began wrongly rejecting legitimate Medicare claims in January. About 60 percent of its patients are on Medicare, and the hospital says it is owed nearly $3 million in unpaid claims. UCare’s closure added about another $1 million in unpaid services. Administrators cut their own pay by 10 percent to keep the hospital open. On Monday, CEO Andy Knutson said Medicare told the hospital it is deactivating two error codes tied to the problem.

Even on the backroads, you still find signs you are headed somewhere. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Farmworkers Got The Day: After lawmakers voted to repeal César Chávez Day, Gov. Tim Walz issued a proclamation naming March 31 Farmworkers Day in Minnesota. The designation honors seasonal, migrant, and agricultural workers and keeps public recognition focused on the people doing the work. Walz signed the repeal Friday and then issued the proclamation. California renamed its holiday for the same date last week, though the change came through a different political fight.

2. Neighbors Kept Showing Up: MPR published a new analysis Monday on how mutual aid networks built during Operation Metro Surge may still be paying off for Twin Cities neighborhoods and small businesses. The reporting looked back at neighbors standing guard outside Lito Burrito on East Lake Street, restaurants on Eat Street feeding each other, and Seward businesses handing out whistles to workers heading home at night. It also tied those bonds to harder numbers. North Star Policy Action estimates the surge pushed Twin Cities employment 2.8 percent below projections and reduced open business locations by 1.7 percent through mid-February. The damage was measurable, and so was what neighbors built in response.

3. Coverage Stayed In Place: A Republican bill that would have stripped Minnesota Medicaid coverage for weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy was laid over by the House Health Finance and Policy Committee, which means the coverage remains in place for now. Doctors, obesity specialists, and diabetes advocates testified against the proposal and argued that long-term obesity treatment saves money. One lawmaker told the committee he no longer needs injectable insulin because of weight loss medication and said the change will let him see a grandchild due in September. For now, the coverage stays.

4. HERC Hunger Strike Starts: Members of the Zero Burn Coalition announced Monday that they will launch a hunger strike on April 10 to pressure Hennepin County commissioners to commit to closing the HERC incinerator by the end of 2027. The action escalates a long-running environmental justice fight over a facility near a working-class, majority-Black area with high asthma burdens and years of frustration over delay. County officials say replacement infrastructure has to come first before the plant can close. Activists say they have already been waiting for decades and do not intend to let the timeline keep drifting.

Sometimes the road opens wider. Here are some national stories you may have missed:

1. Black Women Took The Hit: Federal job cuts in 2025 hit Black women harder than any other demographic group. An MPR segment that aired Monday reported that between February and July of last year, Black women lost 319,000 jobs, while white women gained 142,000 and white men gained 365,000. Economists say Black women’s unemployment often acts as a leading indicator for the broader economy. The segment also followed up with women a year later and found the financial and emotional fallout was still ongoing.

2. Bank Settled Epstein Case: A proposed Bank of America settlement in the Jeffrey Epstein litigation was reported Monday, with the bank agreeing to pay $72.5 million to resolve claims brought by hundreds of survivors. The lawsuit said the bank ignored suspicious financial activity and kept doing business with Epstein despite repeated warning signs. The settlement still needs approval from U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, who scheduled a hearing for Thursday. Bank of America denied facilitating sex trafficking. The deal follows earlier Epstein-related settlements by JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank.

Another Way Through

Poet Robert Frost wrote, “The best way out is always through.” Some days, we are taking the backroads… no shortcuts, and nothing flashy, but they keep you moving when the main road is jammed up or headed somewhere you do not want to go. Sure, maybe the drive is quieter, local, improvised, a little slower… but it lets you keep seeing things as they really are, and there is dignity in knowing how to keep going without waiting for the highway to clear.

Sometimes the drive takes a little longer… and sometimes, that’s the point.

On the North Shore, a lighthouse does not stop the storm. It does not calm the water, undo the wreckage, or make Lake Superior less dangerous than it is. Its job is simpler than that and, in some ways, harder... staying visible enough that people out in the dark can find their bearings by it. After the No Kings events on Saturday, St. Paul felt a little like that. Not because Minnesota was the whole story, but because it became one of the places the rest of the country could look toward and see what public resolve actually looks like when it shows up in the open. This weekend’s news felt like a reminder that even in a rough stretch, a place can still cast enough light to help others see where they are and where they might go next.

Today is Monday, March 30, 2026. Here’s what happened in Minnesota:

1. Hennepin Budget Fight Exposes a Rift: The Hennepin County sheriff’s office overspent its 2026 allocation, and commissioners approved a $15.4 million supplemental increase to cover it. Commissioner Angela Conley introduced a motion that would bar the office from exceeding its board-authorized budget again without county board approval and would require monthly spending reports. The office is seeking about $162 million for 2026, which would be a 12.8% increase over 2025, citing staffing shortfalls and overtime. The dispute centers on how much spending authority the sheriff should have without direct board signoff and how quickly commissioners are told when the office is running over budget.

2. Teachers Are Getting Hurt: Minnesota lawmakers are moving toward a partial rollback of the state’s 2023 ban on suspending kindergarten through third-grade students. In Anoka-Hennepin, 157 staff members were injured this school year, and about 70% of those injuries happened in grades K-3. The reporting also described 142 classroom clearings because of student behavior and an incident in which a third-grader punched Principal Denise Schnabel in the face and broke her glasses. Sen. Jim Abeler added language to the Senate education policy bill that would allow one-day suspensions in cases involving serious injury or risk of serious injury after other interventions have been used.

3. Fatal Fire In Seward: A man in his 60s was found dead Saturday after a fire at a home on the 2000 block of 28th Avenue South in Minneapolis. Neighbors saw smoke coming from the second floor and told responders someone might still be inside. The Minneapolis Fire Department said heavy debris slowed access to the stairs, and firefighters reached the second floor after the fire was controlled. He was found there and pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation in Sunday’s reporting.

4. Burning Restrictions Began: The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Sunday that spring burning restrictions would begin Monday across parts of central, northwest, and northeast Minnesota. The DNR said warm temperatures, dry conditions, and cured vegetation had increased wildfire risk and that the state would stop issuing permits for open burning of vegetative debris in the affected counties. Officials also said most wildfires in Minnesota are caused by people and that violators can be held responsible for suppression costs. The restrictions were issued as Minnesota moved into a period of elevated spring burning danger.

It’s not all choppy seas. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. White Bear Lake Showed Up: Family, friends, and community members gathered Sunday in White Bear Lake for the public visitation for Jessi Pierce and her three children after the fire that killed them earlier this month. The visitation was held at Mueller Memorial Funeral Home. Pierce covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com and co-hosted the Bardown Beauties podcast. Investigators have said they found no evidence of arson and have been examining electrical systems, appliances, and household items as possible causes. The visitation brought together members of the hockey community, neighbors, and other mourners.

2. No Kings Went National: Organizers estimated more than 200,000 people attended Saturday’s rally at the Capitol in St. Paul, while the Minnesota State Patrol estimated more than 100,000. National organizers said more than 8 million people took part across more than 3,300 events, and some outlets described it as the largest single-day protest in U.S. history while noting that the top-line figure had not been independently verified. Coverage across major outlets treated St. Paul as one of the weekend’s flagship protest sites. Whatever final turnout counts settle at, Minnesota clearly ended up as one of the places the country was watching.

3. May Day Talk Began: One of the weekend’s movement reports said Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin announced a May 1 general strike as organizers looked ahead to what comes next after Saturday’s demonstrations. The same report cited Minnesota’s January general strike as part of the example organizers were building from. It did show Minnesota being referenced as organizers started talking about what May Day could look like. After a weekend that already put St. Paul in the spotlight, that was another sign Minnesota’s role in the movement is still being noticed.

4. Nuclear Debate Reopened: Minnesota lawmakers are considering whether to fund a study on the future of nuclear power in the state. A coalition including utilities, counties, labor unions, and clean-energy groups wants the Legislature to revisit the state’s moratorium on new nuclear plants by authorizing a formal study. The proposal is focused on examining future options, including newer reactor technologies, rather than approving construction now. The issue is being framed around grid reliability, future electricity demand, and climate goals, and it would reopen a policy debate Minnesota has largely kept closed for decades.

Superior isn’t the only open water to navigate. Here are some national news stories you may have missed.

1. Shutdown Dragged On: The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security remained unresolved Sunday as Congress left Washington without a deal in place. Coverage described it as the longest partial shutdown of its kind, with House and Senate leaders having passed different funding plans and no immediate path to reconciliation before the recess. TSA workers were being paid through emergency action while broader department funding remained stalled. Reporting also said airport staffing problems and long lines had spread as the shutdown dragged on.

2. Iran Talks Were Floated: Pakistan said Sunday that it would soon host talks between the United States and Iran as the monthlong war continued to disrupt the region. There was no immediate confirmation from Washington or Tehran, and it was not clear whether the talks would be direct or indirect. Separately, diplomats from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt met in Islamabad to discuss proposals tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing the risk of wider economic fallout. Sunday’s reporting showed diplomacy still being publicly discussed even as the conflict and its pressure on shipping and oil markets continued.

We Are the Light

Activist Anne Lamott wrote, “Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.” That is about as good a description as any of what St. Paul was on Saturday. It was not the whole movement, and it did not need to be. It was one bright point that helped make the scale of that movement visible. In a time when so much public life is designed to make people feel isolated, it matters when a place becomes recognizable as a signal to others that they are not alone.

The light does not do the journey for you... but it can help you believe there is still a way through.

While I typically wax poetic each day with a metaphor about my love for Minnesota, today’s edition requires nothing more than this photo at the capitol to explain the incredible spirit of the people who live here. At the Minnesota State Capitol, those steps built to lead people into government became a place where people stood outside power and answered back to it together. While we in Minnesota have a long history of that, we know not every crowd changes what it came to change and not every public gathering becomes part of the record… but sometimes a day gets large enough and clear enough that it resets the mood of a state. Personally standing amongst the crowd yesterday, it certainly felt that way. No Kings was the story that set the tone in Minnesota… and the country.

Today is Sunday, March 29, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. No Kings Filled Capitol: The biggest story in Minnesota on Saturday was the No Kings rally in St. Paul, the flagship event in a nationwide day of protest against the Trump administration. MPR reported that at least 100,000 (some estimated 200,000 or more) people descended on the Capitol area. Reuters and AP both described Minnesota as the national center of the day’s action, with Bruce Springsteen, Bernie Sanders, Tim Walz, Jane Fonda and others tying the moment directly to Operation Metro Surge, the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, and the broader fight over whether public power still answers to the public. It was one of the largest protest days Minnesota has seen in years, and it happened here.

2. Train Cars Left Tracks: A Canadian National train derailed north of Warroad just before 5 a.m. Saturday, sending 42 cars off the tracks near Highway 313 and forcing evacuations from nearby homes. CBS Minnesota reported that two of the cars were classified as carrying dangerous goods, though authorities said there were no reported leaks, injuries, or fires as of Saturday afternoon. A precautionary evacuation zone was established along Highway 313, and the Patch Motel in Warroad was opened for residents who needed to leave. Cleanup is expected to take two to three days, and the cause remains under investigation.

3. Fire Risk Covered Minnesota: Large parts of Minnesota spent Saturday under extreme fire danger as dry air, strong winds, and dormant vegetation created conditions where any spark could spread fast. The Minnesota DNR said the National Weather Service had issued a Red Flag Warning for most of the state effective Saturday, and local coverage said the warning covered 72 counties. The DNR suspended open burning permits statewide and discouraged campfires while the warning was in place. In some areas, winds were expected to gust as high as 45 miles per hour. Even in late March, Minnesota can turn volatile fast... and on Saturday that risk was not isolated to one region.

4. Auditor Hopeful Was Arrested: State Rep. Elliott Engen, a Republican from White Bear Township and a candidate for state auditor, was arrested early Friday on suspicion of fourth-degree DWI after White Bear Lake police stopped him for speeding, expired registration, and a broken headlight. Axios Twin Cities reported that a breath test registered 0.13, above the legal limit, and that Engen was booked into the Ramsey County jail before being released less than two hours later. He apologized publicly, and House Speaker Lisa Demuth said she was extremely disappointed and would consider consequences as the legal process moves forward.

Yesterday was filled with more joy than most. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Grief Was Spoken Aloud: One of the clearest moments of the day came when the rally made room for grief. AP reported that Bruce Springsteen performed “Streets of Minneapolis,” the song he wrote in response to the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, and told the crowd that Minnesota’s pushback had given the rest of the country hope. Bring Me The News also quoted Springsteen saying from the stage, “This past winter, federal troops brought death and terror to the streets of Minneapolis... Well, they picked the wrong city.” Jane Fonda also read a letter from Becca Good, keeping Renée Good’s name at the center of the day instead of letting it fade into the backdrop.

2. Minnesota Showed Up Everywhere: The flagship rally in St. Paul drew the biggest crowd, but Saturday’s No Kings day was never only a Capitol event. Three separate marches launched at noon from Harriet Island, St. Paul College, and Western Sculpture Park before converging on the Capitol at 2 p.m. and the city itself became part of the demonstration before the speeches started. Minnesota Reformer reported that rural Worthington held its own rally that afternoon, small but spirited, in one of the most diverse communities in the state… this was part of nearly 100 separate planned No Kings events across Minnesota, from Duluth to Bemidji to Rochester to the Iron Range. The crowds on the ground were only part of it... plenty of people were also following along online through livestreams.

3. Tuition Law Stayed Standing: Minnesota also carried a legal win into the weekend. On Friday, a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department’s challenge to the state’s policy allowing some students without legal status to receive in-state tuition and scholarships if they attended a Minnesota high school for at least three years. The Associated Press reported that Judge Katherine Menendez said the federal government had failed to prove the policy unlawfully discriminated against U.S. citizens and also lacked standing to sue Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison over it.

4. Minnesota Played On: While most of Minnesota’s attention was on St. Paul, two state programs were competing on the road. Friday night in Sacramento, the Gophers women’s basketball fell 80-56 to No. 1 UCLA in the Sweet 16… but the final score understates the season. It was the program’s first Sweet 16 in 21 years, and a 24-9 record in Dawn Plitzuweit’s third year. Senior Amaya Battle said afterward that reaching the Sweet 16 should be done every year and grown from, not treated as a ceiling. Up in Albany the same night, Minnesota-Duluth beat Penn State 3-1 in the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Hunter Anderson scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes left, and sophomore Ty Hanson sealed it with an empty-netter. The Bulldogs face top-seeded Michigan on Sunday for a Frozen Four berth.

The people were moving everywhere yesterday. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. No Kings Went Global: The third No Kings national day of protest drew participants to more than 3,200 events in all 50 states, with international demonstrations across Europe, Latin America, and Australia… France, Italy, and Australia among the confirmed locations. Organizers said the first two events drew roughly 5 million and 7 million participants respectively, and expected Saturday’s turnout to surpass both, though final counts were not yet confirmed. Most events were peaceful, though clashes and arrests were reported in Los Angeles, Denver, Portland, and Dallas. St. Paul served as the national centerpiece, a deliberate choice by organizers because of what Minnesota endured this winter.

2. Iran War Kept Widening: The U.S.-Israel war on Iran entered its fourth week Saturday with a major escalation. Yemen's Houthis launched ballistic missile strikes on Israel, widening the conflict to a new front. Trump extended his Strait of Hormuz deadline to April 6 as talks remained uncertain, and the Senate earlier this week again failed to pass a War Powers resolution, 53-47, largely along party lines. At CPAC, Matt Gaetz warned that a ground invasion of Iran "will make our country poorer and less safe," reflecting growing Republican dissent. Trump's approval rating has fallen to 36%, its lowest since returning to office, and the Dow has dropped more than 10% from its February high and entered correction territory.

What the Steps Carried

Yesterday, Bernie Sanders told the crowd in St. Paul, “We will not allow this country to descend into authoritarianism or oligarchy in America. We, the people, will rule.” That was the spirit of Minnesota all day. Not passive, not intimidated, and not willing to hand over public life without a fight. Yesterday did not solve everything. It did not bring anyone back, undo the damage, or guarantee what comes next. But it did make one thing clear… that people here, and everywhere, are still willing to show up for each other in numbers too large to dismiss.

Yesterday, we made it clear that we, the people, will still rule.

At the Minnesota State Capitol, the stone steps have carried more than lawmakers. They have carried generations of ordinary people who came there to insist that power answer to someone beyond itself. Women marched in Minnesota more than a century ago to demand a voice in a system built without them, and the Capitol grounds still hold that history. This weekend’s No Kings rally belongs to that older tradition too... not the tradition of spectacle, but of public pressure. The last two days of news in Minnesota felt shaped by that same truth... that institutions rarely correct themselves without people showing up, documenting the harm, and refusing to be ruled in silence.

Today is Saturday, March 28, 2026. Here’s what happened in Minnesota on Thursday and Friday:

1. Lawsuit Wave Begins: Minneapolis civil rights attorneys announced the first formal wave of class-action complaints against federal agencies on behalf of more than 70 Operation Metro Surge victims, alleging wrongful assault, abuse, and arrests without legal basis. Civil rights firm BNCL Law filed at least 10 initial complaints Thursday, with more expected as additional victims complete intake. Attorney John Burris said one of the central obstacles is that many federal agents were masked throughout the operation, making it harder to identify who did what or which agency bears responsibility. DHS had not responded to requests for comment. The firm says it is not done filing.

2. Treatment Was Interrupted: Oudone Lothirath was fighting aggressive lymphoma when ICE detained him in January. While in custody in Texas, he missed four of five scheduled chemotherapy sessions, and a scan last month showed the cancer had spread into his bone marrow. He entered hospice on March 20. His friend and personal care assistant, Christina Vilay, said ICE released him only after she presented a letter from M Health Fairview warning he would not survive without ongoing treatment. The Star Tribune found his case was not isolated, with court filings and GoFundMe pages documenting untreated injuries, denied medications, and missed surgeries across the detention system.

3. HCMC Nearing the Edge: Minnesota’s largest public safety-net hospital has already cut 100 positions, eliminated five departments, and reduced capacity by 100 beds. Three in four patients at Hennepin County Medical Center are uninsured or publicly insured, making it especially vulnerable to the more than $170 million in annual Medicaid cuts projected to hit under the One Big Beautiful Bill starting next year. The hospital has been operating on a county line of credit since January. Without a sales tax expansion requiring state legislative approval, county leaders say HCMC will begin the process of winding down. No legislative vote has been scheduled.

4. Enforcement Never Really Stopped: Friday coverage made clear that Operation Metro Surge did not fully end when the largest deployments left Minnesota. Advocates told MPR that detentions and transfers are still happening and that nearly 500 federal agents remain in the state. That reality shaped the lead-up to Saturday’s No Kings rally in St. Paul, where organizers described the protest not only as a memorial, but as a response to an enforcement presence they say never fully went away. For many families, the issue was no longer whether the surge was still making headlines. It was whether the consequences were still unfolding.

Even under pressure, people are still showing up. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. 100,000 March Today: Today, Saturday March 28, the national flagship No Kings rally takes place at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. Bruce Springsteen performs “Streets of Minneapolis” live at the Capitol, joined by Joan Baez, Jane Fonda, Maggie Rogers, Sen. Bernie Sanders, AG Keith Ellison, and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. Three marches begin at noon from separate St. Paul locations and converge at the Capitol at 2 p.m. This is one of more than 3,000 protests planned across the country today. The rally is not just remembering what happened. It is responding to what is still happening.

2. Judge Protects Lawyer Access: A federal judge extended her order Friday requiring that federal authorities give immigrants detained in Minnesota immediate access to attorneys, keeping a protection in place that had been scheduled to lapse. The extension directly covers hundreds of people still moving through immigration courts following Operation Metro Surge. Without it, advocates say people could be deported before a lawyer could reach them in cases that might otherwise succeed. The order is narrow, but enforceable, and it keeps one basic piece of due process in place while families are still trying to find representation.

3. Advocates Confront Delta: After airport surveillance footage emerged Thursday showing five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos being walked onto a commercial Delta flight to a Texas detention facility by plain-clothes federal escorts, Minnesota advocates demanded accountability directly from the airline. MN 50501’s Nick Benson called on Delta’s CEO to meet with the community and account for how many Minnesota children and families were transferred to detention on its planes. Delta reiterated that it does not coordinate with DHS and that government travel is booked through third parties. Advocates said that answer is not good enough and that they intend to keep pressing for a direct meeting and a direct answer.

4. Willmar Stayed Together: When ICE agents descended on Willmar this winter, longtime residents stepped up for their immigrant neighbors, and new connections formed across divides that predated the surge. MPR News reported Thursday on the solidarity that emerged in one of Minnesota’s most diverse small cities, where large Somali, Latino, and Hmong communities live alongside deep political differences. Faith leaders, community members, and local officials built ties under pressure that organizers say may outlast the enforcement itself. It was a quieter story than most, but it pointed to something durable.

There were national developments worth watching too. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Vance Targets Minnesota Again: Vice President JD Vance convened the inaugural White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud on Friday with nearly half the Cabinet in the room, and Minnesota was once again used as the centerpiece example. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller used the formal setting to describe a fictional Somali neighbor with a Mercedes who “never seems to go to work,” using a racist stereotype in an official government setting. Vance cited Minnesota fraud allegations as the model for the task force’s national mission. Gov. Tim Walz has repeatedly called the administration’s fixation on Minnesota a campaign of retribution.

2. Senate and DOJ Doubled Down: After 42 days of a funding standoff tied directly to the federal killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, the U.S. Senate passed a 2 a.m. Friday bill funding TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard while refusing to restore ICE and Customs and Border Protection funding. House Republicans rejected it, proposed a full stopgap that would restore ICE funding, and then failed to pass that too. In the same week, Justice Department lawyers admitted they had relied for months on erroneous information when defending ICE courthouse arrests, conceding that the memo they cited did not apply to immigration courts at all. DHS announced no change in policy: courthouse arrests will continue.

3. Iran War Week Four: President Trump extended the pause on striking Iran’s power plants until April 6 even as Iran rejected the U.S. peace proposal and countered with its own cease-fire conditions. The U.N. nuclear watchdog warned this week that recent strikes near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant risk a major radiological accident affecting a large area. Meanwhile, House Armed Services Committee members from both parties said Thursday they were unsatisfied with the administration’s briefing on the war, including what the war is actually for and when it ends. Gas prices in California are approaching nine dollars a gallon. The war is now in its fourth week, and no exit is in view.

What the Steps Remember

Joan Baez said, “Action is the antidote to despair.” The Capitol grounds have seen this before... not this exact moment, but this same argument over who power belongs to. Long before this weekend’s No Kings rally, Minnesotans came to those steps to insist that public life could not belong only to the already powerful. That is part of what those worn stones mean. They are not just architecture. They are evidence that ordinary people return, and return again, until the pressure leaves a mark.

Power always tries to look permanent... until enough people keep showing up to remind it otherwise.

In downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, there is a second city built above the street. For people seeing them for the first time, the skyways must look a little strange... enclosed walkways connecting buildings block by block, letting people move through the heart of the city without having to face the full force of winter at every corner. It’s incredible that when they were built, so many buildings chose to give up a little of their own space so people could keep moving. That just seems very Minnesotan to me… if each of us just carries a little of the weight, life gets easier for all of us.

Today is Thursday, March 26, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. New Rumblings and Costs: Community monitors and local journalists posted warnings Wednesday about possible renewed ICE activity in the Twin Cities metro, including Lee Stedman, who said observers were seeing what looked like a resurgence of sightings across the area. Note that those posts were community reports, not a formal public accounting from law enforcement. The same day, a new survey gave harder numbers to the damage Operation Metro Surge already caused, estimating nearly $243.8 million in lost wages across Minneapolis and St. Paul. More than a third of Minneapolis respondents and about a fifth of St. Paul respondents said they missed work during the operation, while others reported missed school, delayed medical care, and less trust in calling police afterward.

2. Lawmakers Say Targeted: Several Minnesota DFL lawmakers said federal immigration agents tracked them to their homes during Operation Metro Surge. Records reviewed by the Star Tribune show agents ran Rep. Brad Tabke’s license plate about 30 minutes before an SUV drove to his Shakopee home and filmed it in January, and Tabke said agents came back more than once. Sen. Lindsey Port said masked agents in tactical gear parked outside her Burnsville home and photographed the property. Another lawmaker said an agent greeted her by name even though they had never met. The reporting added new detail to how far the operation reached beyond arrests and into the private lives of elected officials.

3. Bond Hearings Cut Back: The Eighth Circuit ruled Wednesday that some immigrants arrested inside the United States can be detained without a bond hearing. The 2 to 1 decision reversed lower-court orders that had required hearings for many detainees in Minnesota and six other states. The ruling affects a large number of Minnesota cases filed during and after Operation Metro Surge, when hundreds of habeas petitions landed in federal court. For some families, that means a person can remain jailed while their immigration case moves forward without first getting a hearing on whether they should be released.

4. Somali Cases Fast Tracked: Minnesota attorneys filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday challenging what they describe as a push to move Somali asylum cases through immigration court on compressed timelines. The suit was brought by Hines Immigration Law in Roseville and the Advocates for Human Rights in Minneapolis. Lawyers said hearing dates were suddenly moved up, leaving less time to gather records, prepare testimony, and line up witnesses. One Twin Cities attorney said she now has 40 Somali asylum hearings scheduled in the next six months, while another said 73 of her 113 removal cases are Somali. The lawsuit argues the policy unfairly targets one nationality and violates due process.

Even when the view through the glass is darkened by surveillance and legal setbacks, the work of keeping the route open goes on. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Walz Creates Public Record: Gov. Tim Walz signed an executive order Wednesday creating a council to document how Operation Metro Surge and Operation PARRIS affected Minnesotans. The group will gather testimony, firsthand accounts, and data, then make recommendations on how to prevent similar harm and support recovery. Up to 15 members will serve on the council, and applications are now open through the Secretary of State’s office. Instead of leaving the record scattered across lawsuits, memorials, and individual testimony, Minnesota is now creating an official place to collect what happened here and what it cost.

2. St. Paul Tries To Hold The Line: St. Paul took two housing steps Wednesday aimed at families still trying to recover from Operation Metro Surge. The City Council voted unanimously to extend the city’s pre-eviction filing period to 60 days beginning May 14 and running through the end of the year. On the same day, officials also laid out the next phase of the city’s emergency rental assistance program, with applications reopening April 1 in short two-day windows. Eligible renters can receive up to $3,500 paid directly to landlords, and residents who are not selected can apply again the following month.

3. Community Groups Shift To Recovery: Community groups said Wednesday that the need created by Operation Metro Surge did not disappear just because the visible enforcement slowed down. Sahan Journal reported that organizers and legal advocates are now shifting from emergency response into longer-term recovery work as families continue dealing with detention cases, lost income, and neighborhood disruption. Minnesota 8 said businesses and households are still struggling, while MIRAC said it had shifted during the surge from policy work into direct action and street monitoring. The immediate shock may have passed, but the legal aid, economic help, and organizing work are still very much active.

4. Recovery Money Starts Moving: Hennepin County officials said nearly 1,000 applications came in for a $2 million small-business relief fund tied to Operation Metro Surge. Eligible businesses can receive grants ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 to help cover rent and other short-term operating costs after months of lost foot traffic and lower revenue. County officials said 68 percent of applicants were Minneapolis businesses and 32 percent came from suburban Hennepin County, representing 24 municipalities. Reviews begin Thursday, making this one of the first larger rounds of local money now moving directly toward shops and restaurants still dealing with the economic fallout.

As we keep our local passages open, the view through the window shows national storms that aren’t stopping at our borders. Here are some national stories worth knowing:

1. Senate Leaves War Powers Open: Iran rejected a U.S. ceasefire proposal Wednesday even as mediators kept passing messages and Trump kept insisting Tehran wanted a deal. AP reported that Iran also issued its own demands, including reparations and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, while fighting continued across the region and a strike hit a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport. Reuters reported that Iran told intermediaries any broader ceasefire would also have to include Lebanon. The standoff came the same month Senate Republicans blocked a war powers resolution that would have required congressional approval for further military action against Iran.

2. GOP Targets Abortion Pills: Senate Republicans opened a formal investigation Wednesday into abortion pill manufacturers and pressed the FDA to restrict online sales of mifepristone. Sen. Bill Cassidy is leading the effort, asking manufacturers to turn over records on safety, adverse events, and distribution practices. The Supreme Court left mifepristone on the market last year after a legal challenge failed to remove it. Republicans are now using oversight pressure and regulatory channels to try to narrow access without passing a new federal abortion ban.

A Shared Passage

Charles Dickens wrote, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.” I have spent enough time in the skyways over the years to know they can feel a little like a maze at first. Then, after a while, they start to make sense… you learn the turns, trust the connections, and realize how many separate pieces have to hold together to get you where you need to go. Public life feels like that sometimes too. We get through hard seasons when people keep showing up for one another, carrying what they can, and making the way less confusing, less lonely, and a little easier to move through.

When enough people keep holding up their part, it makes the path easier for everyone.

For passengers flying through MSP, that meant a more normal day than many had expected and one less federal disruption on a day that had plenty of them.

2. Relief Bill Advances: A Minnesota Senate committee advanced a bill Monday that would create a $100 million grant and loan program for businesses harmed by Operation Metro Surge. The proposal would help businesses that can show at least a 20 percent loss in revenue tied to the federal enforcement operation. Across the Minnesota prairie, you’ll find giant boulders of granite or quartz that don’t match the soil around them. Called “glacial erratics,” they are heavy pieces of the past carried hundreds of miles and dropped here by retreating ice. I think about those “erratics” a lot on days like this. They are immovable reminders of a massive force that reshaped this entire landscape long ago, much like the persistent federal oversight and deep-rooted community trauma we navigate today. These are the heavy, permanent facts sitting in our fields, shaping how we live even as the daily weather changes.

Today is Monday, March 23, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. MSP Braces For ICE: Federal immigration officers are being sent to airports nationwide starting Monday to help with long TSA lines during the partial Homeland Security shutdown, and it was still unclear Sunday whether Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport would be one of them. Border czar Tom Homan confirmed the plan and said he was working to get agents into airports as soon as March 23rd. Immigration officers may be used for tasks like guarding exit lanes or checking IDs, though not screening passengers at checkpoints. Sunday ended with MSP still waiting to learn whether it would be part of that rollout.

2. Threats Change Officeholding: Threats against elected officials and public workers in Minnesota are rising enough that they are changing how people do the job. A review of police service calls for more than 200 elected officials, along with State Patrol data, showed threats toward Capitol workers jumped sharply from 2024 to 2025 and had already reached 45 in the first two months of 2026. Security around the Capitol complex has increased, including metal detectors for visitors. Those precautions are becoming more routine for people trying to do public work in Minnesota right now, even when the work itself is supposed to be public and ordinary.

3. Jessi Pierce Identified: The adult killed in Saturday’s White Bear Lake house fire I reported yesterday was identified Sunday as Jessi Pierce, a hockey reporter who covered the Minnesota Wild and co-hosted the Bardown Beauties podcast. Police responded to the 2500 block of 17th Avenue South around 10:15 p.m. and found the older teen dead at the scene, while the younger one was expected to survive. Investigators believe a fight among a group inside the apartment escalated to gunfire. The suspects fled before officers arrived, and no arrests had been announced by Sunday. It was another weekend homicide in Minneapolis, with investigators still trying to piece together what happened inside the apartment and who pulled the trigger.

Even around the most immovable obstacles, the ground is soft enough for new things to take root. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Wrong Person Charges Dropped: I reported on this Saturday, but Sunday brought a more serious turn in the federal case against Heather Danae Lewis, the Brooklyn Park engineer wrongly swept up in the anti-ICE Cities Church protest prosecution. Lewis was never at the protest. Investigators traced her cellphone to a nearby parking lot where she was picking up auction items, then matched her driver’s license photo to protest footage anyway. She was later pulled over, handcuffed, and interrogated for hours. Federal prosecutors moved to dismiss the charges with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled. She was finally removed from a case she should never have been in, leaving questions as to why this happened in the first place.

2. Pantry Is Still Running: One classroom in a St. Paul Spanish-immersion elementary school that is still functioning as a grocery distribution center after Operation Metro Surge as told through a piece by NPR. Shelves were stocked with cereal, beans, masa, diapers, cleaning supplies and backpacks full of books while parent volunteers kept the pantry going. Community members in yellow vests watched the perimeter during recess, and a district security vehicle sat outside after someone reported an ICE vehicle nearby. We do not get to choose whether history left its weight here in our neighborhoods or at our gates, but we do get to choose whether we walk past it again or finally decide to face it. By checking in on those most vulnerable to these shifts or donating to local funds, we can continue to reckon with the heavy things in our landscape. Some of the hardest things we see are also the clearest markers of where the work still is.

If you’re from here, it goes without saying that mosquitoes are one of the most Minnesotan things there are. Tiny, relentless, impossible to reason with, and somehow able to turn a perfectly good day into something tense, itchy, and slightly absurd. They almost never show up one at a time, either. It is the swarm that gets you, the hovering, the circling, the way they make ordinary life feel harder than it should. This reminds me of something but I can't quite put my finger on what...

Today is Sunday, March 22nd, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. Injuries Still Linger: Most of the federal agents sent into Minnesota are gone, but the people hurt during Operation Metro Surge are still living with what happened. The Star Tribune reported Saturday that Aliya Rahman, John Abernathy, Wes Powers and others are still dealing with pain, medical care, fear and emotional fallout after violent encounters with federal agents. Rahman said shoulder and head pain still bring her back to the moment she was pulled from her car. The piece followed what those injuries still look like in daily life weeks after the drawdown, for both the people hurt directly and the communities that watched it happen.

2. Fire Kills Four: A house fire in White Bear Lake killed one adult and three children early Saturday morning. Neighbors called 911 just before 5:30 a.m. after seeing flames through the roof of the home on Richard Avenue and fearing people were still inside. A dog also died in the fire. Officials had not released the victims’ names by Saturday evening and were still working to determine what caused it. The fire left one family dead and a neighborhood waiting for answers.

3. Wildfire Bill Lands Hard: The Minnesota DNR is seeking nearly $150,000 from a Morrison County woman over the cost of fighting a grassfire that burned more than 2,000 acres in Morrison County last April. The agency filed suit in district court last week and says state law allows it to recover firefighting costs when someone is found responsible for negligently causing a wildfire. Elizabeth Young said she was stunned by the size of the bill and said she believed her husband had already reported the fire. The case now asks a judge to decide whether she is legally responsible for a disaster response big enough to change a person’s finances for years.

4. Five Killed In Crash: Five people died and eight others were hurt after a head-on crash Friday afternoon in Cottonwood County involving an SUV and a family’s party bus. The Star Tribune reported Saturday that the crash happened on Highway 71 north of Windom. Four people in the bus and the SUV driver were killed, and several survivors were taken to hospitals with injuries. Four of the people who died were from the same family, gathered that afternoon to celebrate a birthday. The fifth was the SUV driver, who was alone in his car.

Minnesota gets swarmed, but there’s always someone who brings the bug spray. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Rent Relief Gets Bigger: A biotech entrepreneur from St. Anthony Village is pledging at least $16 million to help Minneapolis residents pay rent after Operation Metro Surge. John Wilson, through his foundation, concluded rent delinquency was one of the biggest immediate threats facing families still trying to recover from the crackdown. He said his goal is to cover half the estimated need through June and push others to match the rest. He estimated his own donations will soon approach $4 million, and he also offered to match city funding. Aid workers said the money could help keep many more families from being pushed toward eviction.

2. Protest Charge Dropped: A federal court dismissed charges Friday against Heather Denae Lewis, one of the people indicted over the anti-ICE church protest in St. Paul. FOX 9 reported Saturday night that the court filing gave no reason for the dismissal, but because it was dismissed with prejudice, the charges cannot be filed again. In the same case, a magistrate judge also blasted the government for producing zero evidence so far, writing that prosecutors had shown “an intense appetite to initiate” the case but were failing on discovery obligations. It was one of the clearest signs yet that at least part of the government’s case is starting to crack.

3. Victor Gets Honored: Victor Greenawalt, the 10 year old who shielded a classmate during last year’s mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, will receive a national Citizen Honors Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Medal of Honor recipients chose Victor after concluding he showed extraordinary bravery beyond his years. During the August 2025 shooting, Victor was hurt while shielding a classmate from gunfire. A ceremony in Washington is scheduled for March 25. It brought a hard Minnesota story back into view, this time with courage at the center of it.

4. Rondo Exchange Opens: A new business incubator opened Saturday in St. Paul’s Rondo neighborhood, giving Black entrepreneurs a new place to build, sell, and grow. The Rondo Exchange is part of a broader push by the Rondo Community Land Trust to strengthen one of Minnesota’s most historically important Black communities after decades of displacement and disinvestment. The opening brought new shops, new art, and a kind of investment that felt rooted in the neighborhood instead of extracted from it.

The swarm does not stop at the state line. Here are some national news stories you may have missed:

1. ICE Threat Moves Airports: AP reported Saturday that Trump threatened to put ICE officers into airport security roles starting Monday unless Democrats agree to fund the Department of Homeland Security. The proposal came as TSA staffing shortages were already causing long lines and missed paychecks during the partial shutdown. It also made clear that the administration wants to push immigration enforcement deeper into parts of daily life that were already under strain. Trump also said the airport deployment would focus on arresting undocumented immigrants from Somalia, tying the airport fight back to rhetoric already used against Minnesota.

2. Iran Exit Keeps Shifting: Reuters reported Saturday that the war sharply escalated again, with Iranian missiles striking near Israel’s nuclear research center at Dimona and Trump threatening to destroy Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened. The same coverage also reflected an administration still sending shifting signals about what the war is for and where it ends. Energy markets, shipping lanes and allied governments were still reacting to the uncertainty. It was a day that looked less like winding down than widening risk.

We Go Outside Anyway

Thomas Carlyle wrote, “Endurance is patience concentrated.” There is a reason nobody in Minnesota sees one mosquito and thinks, well, that was probably the last of them. We know better. We know the swarm is the point. We also know you do not cancel summer because of it. Some forces count on making public life so miserable people retreat from it on their own... but this is still Minnesota. We have tolerated worse for longer, and usually with a lawn chair. We complain, mutter something unprintable, and go outside anyway. We stand our ground, keep the grill hot, and keep making enough food for whoever still needs a plate.

Many people aren’t aware that SPAM originated in Austin, Minnesota. Not the annoying messages and fake phone calls… the kind you eat, fried crisp with eggs. The blue can from church basements, cabins, and grocery shelves that was so ubiquitous that people always seemed to have at least one tucked somewhere in the pantry. While it is just pork shoulder and ham pressed tight with salt and starch, it’s built to last when fresher things do not. There is something very Minnesota about that. Spam has never really been about elegance. It has been about what keeps… and so have we.

Today is Saturday, March 21, 2026, here’s what happened Thursday and Friday in Minnesota:

1. Liam Ordered Removed: An immigration judge denied the asylum claims of Liam Conejo Ramos and his family on Thursday. Liam is the 5-year-old Columbia Heights boy who was reportedly used as “bait” to detain his father, and whose case became one of the most closely watched tied to Operation Metro Surge. The family is appealing, so the case is not finished, but the decision marked a major setback after months of public attention and legal fights. If the ruling stands, the family could be deported to Ecuador. His attorney said the family was not given a full hearing before the judge terminated the case.

2. Students Still Carry It: Weeks after the height of Operation Metro Surge, Minnesota schools are still absorbing the fallout… missed class time, slipping grades, fear, and mental health strain. Some districts offered online learning because families were afraid to leave home, and staff described students disappearing from class before returning with added stress and instability. The reporting focused especially on St. Paul, where attendance at some schools dropped as much as 60 percent during the surge. A Senate bill to restore school protections from immigration enforcement advanced in committee. The House version did not.

3. Care System Still Strained: Minnesota’s caregiving workforce was already short staffed before Operation Metro Surge, and providers say the crackdown made it harder to manage. Group homes and services for disabled people, older adults, and children rely heavily on immigrant and refugee workers. Employers said the raids and the fraud rhetoric surrounding them have made hiring and retention more difficult. Vacancies across care settings remain hard to fill, and providers described the pressure as showing up across the entire care economy… not just in isolated facilities already under strain before the surge.

4. Campus Fallout Continues: Hamline University and the neighborhoods around it are still processing the emotional aftermath of Operation Metro Surge. A Hamline professor told MPR that the pressure on students, faculty, and nearby communities cannot be treated like a brief disruption that has already passed. The story described students and staff carrying fear and uncertainty weeks after the loudest days of enforcement ended, in a neighborhood still feeling it.

Minnesota doesn’t only hold what’s hard. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Clergy Won Access: A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction Friday requiring the government to allow in-person pastoral visits for detainees at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis. Clergy and faith groups had argued that inconsistent access was preventing them from ministering to people held there during Lent and Ramadan. Judge Jerry Blackwell found the government had no formal written policy guaranteeing such visits and ordered that access be provided. The ruling came out of a challenge brought by Minnesota branches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Church of Christ, and a Catholic priest who sued the Department of Homeland Security.

2. Twin Cities Earned Honor: The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced Thursday that Twin Cities residents will receive a 2026 Profile in Courage Award for their actions during the federal immigration surge. The award recognized residents who protested peacefully, documented enforcement activity, warned neighbors, and defended immigrant families and constitutional protections during Operation Metro Surge. The foundation framed the honor around collective civic action rather than one elected official or single speech. The recognition puts national attention on the public response that emerged in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The award is scheduled to be presented later this year through the Kennedy Library’s annual program.

3. Aliya Will Not Be Charged: Aliya Rahman will not face charges after she was arrested at the State of the Union. Rahman, a Minneapolis woman whose earlier ICE-related detention had already drawn attention in Minnesota, was taken into custody after standing silently during President Trump’s remarks. Federal officials later decided not to move forward with charges. Her attorney said she should not have been arrested in the first place, and that for the second time in two months, she was arrested in a heavy-handed way for committing no crime. The charges were dropped, but the questions about how she was treated did not go away.

4. Store Became Lifeline: When fear from Operation Metro Surge kept customers away, the Palestinian owners of Amigos One Stop in south Minneapolis shifted into delivery mode for Ecuadorian neighbors who were afraid to leave home. The store, a hub for the Lake Street immigrant community since 2009, saw revenue drop 50 to 60 percent during the surge. Instead of waiting for normal business to return, the owners started bringing food and basic supplies directly to customers… and on some occasions didn’t charge people who couldn’t pay. It was neighbors helping neighbors, the plain kind.

The pressure doesn’t stop at the state line. Here are some national news stories you may have missed:

1. Appeals Board Reshaped: As Liam Conejo Ramos’s family prepares to appeal, the system waiting for them has changed too. NPR reported Friday that the Trump administration cut the Board of Immigration Appeals from 28 members to 15 and filled the remaining seats with its own appointees. NPR’s analysis found those judges ruled for the government in 97 percent of cases last year, at least 30 points higher than the board’s 16 year average. The piece also said the reshaped board has issued decisions that make bond harder to get and appeals harder to win. Liam’s family is not just entering an appeals process. They are entering one that has been remade.

2. Judges Warn Publicly: Federal judges are speaking more openly about threats and intimidation… hateful messages, anonymous pizza deliveries sent to their homes, and harassment that has extended to their families. Several judges connected the climate directly to rulings involving Trump administration policies, including immigration. One judge whose son was murdered by a disgruntled attorney said pizzas had been delivered to colleagues in her late son’s name, a clear attempt to send a message about what can happen. Rather than treating the threats as isolated incidents, judges described them as part of a broader pressure campaign on the people still deciding the major cases moving through the courts.

What Keeps

Louise Erdrich wrote, “Here I am, where I ought to be.” Some days the news is less than graceful. It is a shelf of plain things meant to hold… students still trying to recover, clergy forcing open a door that should not have been shut, neighbors still carrying one another when the state or the federal government does not. The value in a day like this is not in polish. Like an unassuming SPAM can, Minnesota keeps us packed tightly enough that the turning air cannot spoil what is inside us.

We know how to keep what matters.

There is something old fashioned about a printing press. Heavy gears. Ink on your hands. A machine that does not care much for spin, only pressure, repetition, and whether the words finally hold. Some days in Minnesota lately feel like that… not because they are the loudest days, but because they are the days when scattered things start becoming record. It is not always the kind of day that feels historic while you are living through it… but has just enough pieces that have been set down that truth has something firmer on which to stand.

Today is Thursday, March 19, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. ALPR Bill Stalls: I reported on this bill yesterday when it was introduced after residents warned license plate reader data could be used to identify ICE observers and figure out where they live. What changed on March 18 is that it failed on a 7 to 7 vote in the House Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Committee. Supporters said the bill would tighten audit rules, shorten retention, and place more limits on how plate data is shared. Law enforcement groups argued the added requirements would be too expensive for smaller departments. For now, the bill is stalled and the current system stays in place.

2. Food Shelf Visits Hit Again: Minnesotans made nearly 9 million visits to food shelves in 2025, according to a report released March 18 by The Food Group and the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families. MPR reported it was the fourth straight record year and nearly triple the number recorded in 2019. The report said many households using food shelves are working families trying to keep up with food prices and other basic costs. The need is not isolated to one part of the state… t showed up across Minnesota at a scale that is getting harder to describe as temporary.

3. More Feeding Our Future Pleas: A husband and wife pleaded guilty March 18 in the Feeding Our Future case, adding two more admissions to the long federal fraud prosecution. The Star Tribune reported they admitted to wire fraud tied to false meal claims submitted during the pandemic, when money meant to feed children was being routed somewhere else instead. Another defendant in the same case rejected a plea offer. The case has already produced convictions, acquittals, and dozens of guilty pleas, and it is still producing new developments more than two years after the first charges were filed.

4. Somali Rocket Docket: I first reported on this broader Somalia fight on March 13. What CBS Minnesota added is that immigration attorneys are now warning Somali asylum cases are being fast tracked into virtual hearings before out of state judges, while court observers say they are being shut out of the proceedings. Attorney Evangeline Dhawan Maloney, who represents about 150 Somali clients, said she now has 40 hearings scheduled in the next six months and believes Somali cases are being singled out for an unusually aggressive push. The TPS stay is still holding for now, but the pressure around these cases is clearly not letting up.

But not everything pressed into the day cut in the same direction. Here are some reasons to hope:

1. Mullin Walked It Back: Markwayne Mullin’s confirmation hearing on March 18 mattered here as much as it did in Washington. During the hearing, he said he regretted calling Alex Pretti a “deranged individual” and acknowledged he had reacted too quickly without knowing the full facts. Senators pressed him hard on immigration enforcement and DHS leadership, and the hearing did not smooth over those concerns. But the record now includes a clear public retreat on Pretti at a moment when Minnesota families and advocates were still waiting to see whether anyone in power would take back the rhetoric that followed his killing.

2. Blatnik Money Finally Released: More than $1 billion in federal funding was secured March 18 for the replacement of the John A. Blatnik Bridge between Duluth and Superior. The Star Tribune reported the bridge is aging, heavily used, and central to freight and daily traffic moving between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The federal money had been delayed even after earlier commitments and public announcements. Minnesota and Wisconsin had already pledged major state funding of their own, but this federal release was the part that had still been hanging out there. Now the project can move ahead with the money in place instead of getting pushed into another round of waiting.

3. Safety Plans Move Forward: Minnesota lawmakers considered a bill March 18 that would require school districts to create violence prevention plans aimed at catching warning signs before a shooting happens. MPR reported the measure would require districts to put prevention planning into place instead of relying only on response after a threat emerges. The bill was still moving through the Legislature Wednesday. It put school safety back in front of lawmakers during a week when the issue was already getting fresh attention around the state.

4. Home Prices Finally Slipped: Minnesota’s median home sale price fell 1.5 percent in February from a year earlier to $339,900, according to Minnesota Realtors data reported March 18 by the Star Tribune. It was the first year over year decline in nearly three years. Sales were also down, even with mortgage rates briefly dipping below 6 percent, and the paper said the balance of power appears to be shifting a little toward buyers as listings rise. It does not suddenly make housing affordable, and inventory remains tight in plenty of places… but February finally broke a stretch where prices kept climbing year after year.

And outside Minnesota, the same pressure kept showing up in bigger ways. Here are some national stories you may have missed:

1. Visa Bonds Expanded: Reuters reported March 18 that the Trump administration will require citizens from 50 countries to post bonds of up to $15,000 to apply for U.S. entry, expanding the policy to people from 12 additional countries. Administration officials said the change is meant to reduce visa overstays, and Reuters reported it is expected to take effect in April. The bond is refundable if a traveler follows the terms of the visa and leaves as required… but it adds another major financial barrier to legal entry at the same time the administration is tightening other parts of the immigration system.

2. Gas Price Relief Discussed: Reuters reported March 18 that the administration was preparing to waive federal summer gasoline rules in an effort to ease fuel prices as the Iran war kept pressure on oil and fuel markets. Analysts told Reuters the move could shave a few cents off the price of a gallon, but they also said retail U.S. gas prices had already climbed to their highest level since late 2023. It was one more sign of how quickly the economic effects of the war were reaching ordinary consumers. By Wednesday, Washington was already looking for ways to soften the blow.

Outlast the Excuses

George Orwell wrote, “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” There is a reason records matter. They do not heal people on their own, they do not feed families, reopen trust, or give back what was taken. But they do keep the truth from having to start over every morning. A committee vote. A courtroom admission. A number too large to shrug off. They give ordinary people something solid to point to when they say this happened, this was warned about, this was admitted, and this should not be forgotten. On days when more of that truth gets fixed in place, the struggle is not meaningless.

The record exists so the truth has a chance to outlast the excuses.

In almost every Minnesota town, the grain elevator is the tallest thing on the horizon. It is where the loose, heavy, unprocessed stuff gets hauled in and measured honestly before anyone decides what to keep, what to store, and what to carry forward. Some days feel like that... not loud at first glance, just weight arriving all at once and asking to be sorted.

Today is Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Here’s what happened yesterday in Minnesota:

1. The Date Still Landed: Temporary Protected Status for Somali immigrants was set to expire at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, the date DHS set when it terminated the program in January. An estimated 400 to 600 Somali TPS holders in Minnesota are affected. A federal court in Boston issued an emergency stay on March 13 that temporarily blocks the termination from taking effect, and CAIR-MN welcomed a same-day reaffirmation of that protection Tuesday, confirming that TPS holders retain work authorization and protection from deportation while litigation continues. I covered the original court order on March 14. For the families watching Tuesday’s calendar, the legal protection and the looming deadline existed at the same time, which is its own kind of fear to carry into a Wednesday morning.

2. Hospitals Need Reinforcements: Gov. Tim Walz brought former health commissioner Jan Malcolm back Tuesday as a senior adviser on hospitals and health systems. The Star Tribune reported that she is returning to help the administration confront the future stability of Minnesota hospitals at a moment when both urban and rural systems are under mounting financial pressure. Malcolm also warned that expected federal cuts could leave hospitals absorbing more unpaid care as people lose coverage or cannot afford treatment. Minnesota is no longer treating hospital strain like a distant problem. It is assigning one of its best-known health officials to deal with it now.

3. Fraud Review Found Gaps: Minnesota’s legislative auditor released a report Tuesday on how possible kickbacks were handled in the state’s autism services program. Applications open March 18 and close March 25, with nonprofit lender NextStage administering the program. The article said many businesses, especially immigrant owned businesses and businesses owned by people of color, lost workers, customers, and revenue during the federal immigration operation. Tuesday finally turned that into something concrete, with actual dollar amounts and a real application window.

2. Privacy Bill Moves Forward: FOX 9 reported Tuesday that Rep. Brad Tabke and the ACLU of Minnesota announced a bill to tighten how automatic license plate reader data is collected, stored, and shared across the state. The proposal would require warrants for certain access, centralize storage, and require that data not tied to an active criminal investigation be deleted within 48 hours. Tabke said the bill was created because of what happened during Operation Metro Surge. Residents at Tuesday’s press conference said plate reader data was allegedly used by federal agents to identify observers and even their home addresses after they watched ICE related activity. MPR reported that the acquisition was financed by a $1.2 million grant from the Duluth based Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, and Band leaders described it as the largest land return in recent Grand Portage history. 4. Neighbors Keep Digging: CBS Minnesota reported that volunteer groups including Saintly City Snow Angels in St. Paul and Fulton Snow Angels in Minneapolis were still helping people dig out after the weekend storm. Reuters also reported that the wider conflict was severely disrupting shipping and deepening fears around oil and trade routes tied to the Strait of Hormuz. Those pressures are already spilling far beyond the Middle East into fuel prices, freight costs, and rising anxiety in farm country over fertilizer and shipping costs. There was no sign Tuesday of a clean diplomatic exit. The war is still widening its economic reach, even for people who may only feel it later at the pump, in a freight bill, or in the cost of a spring planting season.

2. Joe Kent Broke Ranks: Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned over the Iran war and said Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States. Reuters described him as the first senior Trump administration official to quit over the conflict. His resignation letter pushed internal disagreement into public view and directly challenged the basis for the war itself. Kent’s departure will not change policy overnight, but it does put a clear break on the record from inside the administration’s own national security structure. On a week when the war has already hit Minnesota through loss, fuel anxiety, and market pressure, that kind of public dissent carried real weight.
